| - taken from Head Kick Legend | Quote: | One of the events for this year's K-1 Grand Prix will be the return of the Oceania qualifying GP. Though it is still some time away, news has started to come out regarding this event.
The 2010 Oceania GP will be held July 10 in Canberra, Australia. There will be four Australian fighters, and four New Zealand fighters competing in the tournament, with the winner earning a spot in the Final 16. Confirmed participants so far are Aussies Paul Slowinski and Ben Edwards, with Sio Vitale and Andrew Peck representing NZ. Rumors also have Doug Viney, Tafa Misipati and Jay Hepi participating, and Peck perhaps being out.
Despite having an up and down record the past two years, Slowinski should come into this the easy favorite. Ben Edwards could be a dark horse pick, although he did lose to Slowinski at an Evolution event last October. The other man who could be a favorite to win, should he be entered, is Nathan Corbett - a highly regarded fighter who many fans have long wanted to see in K-1. Because of his smaller size for the HW division, Corbett has previously said not to expect him in K-1, though recently rumors have begun cropping up saying that he may make the K-1 jump this year. Corbett would make a great addition to this field and bring in some more new blood to the K-1 scene.
In addition to the tournament, there will be three super fights. Signed so far: Charles August (AUS) vs Jared Botha (AUS), with the two remaining super fights yet to be determined.
From 2000-2006 the Oceania GP was a standard part of the K-1 season. Past champions include Mark Hunt (who used his Oceania win as a springboard to victory in the GP), Adam Watt, Peter Graham, and Slowinski. This will mark the return of K-1 action to the Oceania region after a 4 year absence. |
Please sign Corbett, he's alot better then Slowinski. |
