I've been looking at some open guard sweeps lately, and have seen that most instructional I see have a small difference compared to what I have learned...
If you look after the sweep is done, the guy standing falls on his back and the guy on the ground passes with the foot he has on his opponents hip. I have learnt that passing like that, you risk giving your back... Instead I take the foot I have on his hip back and pass with the other.
how do you guys pass????

| The bluebelt preforming the sweep was absolutely retarded. If that had been done like that during a live session, he'd have gotten his back taken in a second. You could pass in a similar knee through fashion, but you'd have have to switch to an underhook so that you can control their upper body and pin them down. Honestly though, I just like to do this sweep, continue to hold their ankle (or gi), and stand up with them on their back so that I can play with more dynamic passes or attack a leglock right away. |

Yeah, I thought the same when I watched this...
I tried this way in practice and it just didnt feel right. If passing, I think going with the other leg first is the only opition. Standing up sounds like a good option too though._________________ Sig bet record 1-1 (1NC) |

It all depends on your style. I play at the 121 division or anything from 114-145, really, so I play alot of speed and scrambles. This sweep for me is entirely about standing up and getting to top position while standing. I honestly don't like being in someone's closed guard since I'm smaller and can be moved around alot easier. Personally, I just feel that standing is a far stronger pass, it enables you to disengage and control the pace a bit more, plus if the guy on the bottom engages in leglocks while I'm standing that plays into my game, so that helps too. |
