Ok, so basically, last Saturday I was sparring with a guy who was significantly taller and haevier than me, but he was new to the club (had done Boxing for three years), so I was matched up with him.

Anyway, the kid threw some hard punches, with one of them splitting my lip. Since he was new, I was going easy up on him up until that point. I got pissed at him, and threw a punchat his ribs that forced him to sit out for the majority of the rest of the lesson. It wasn't even like the kid wasn't used to training, he spent, as aforementioned, three years doing Boxing (although from what I understand, Boxing classes contain less sparring, and more hitting pads. I could be incorrect about this, though).

I didn't feel guilty at all. He was going too hard on me, so I humbled him. However, my question to you guys is do you go rough back to someone if they are pushing you, evne though it is just sparring? Have you ever injured someone while doing so?

an eye for an eye leaves the world blind. Step back, say "you're going too hard" and touch gloves.

Depends on the situation. If the guy is clearly just an agro-fuckwad no matter what, I can kind of forgive that a bit more than dudes that only tard out once they start getting tapped/roughed up.

It's up to you I guess,

Instead of harming them and sinking to thier level (The idea of training at a gym is to fight other oponents, not each other) I try outsmarting them.
For eg. a combo your good at or a submission you have got down, just pop it out and show them what you can do, maybe they then will realise they should stop being a fuckwit.

At my gym, we tell each other or the trainer picks up on it and will allert the bastard that it's just training.

BUT aggression in training is crucial if your fight training, just in good terms, not being an asshole so to speak.

Personally I think its a bad idea to go 100% first time you spar with someone. I am not agressive at all, and could probably be more aggressive, but I also chose partners with that in mind. If someone I know is going hard want to sparr, I will let them know I want to go easy (or I have the option to go harder myself).

But more to your point, if he is going hard, then so should you... I have never injured someone (that I know of), but have cracked a rib, some bruises and a heel to the nose looked messier than it really was. Not much to speak of, I guess....

aggressive grappler but controlled striker describes me best. if you can't avoid a n00b's punches, that's your fault and shouldn't go hard on him. I mean, wehn i spar with guys that started after me, their punches are like in slow motion to me and it's easy to avoid or parry.

again, i think a persons reaction is going to be based on their own experiance within MMA, for example a less experianced fighter would probibly dish out jest as much as he recieved.....then neither fighter learns anything and the sparring was a waste of time!

A more experianced fighter uses sparring more efficiently and will educate the fighter to what he is doing wrong.

once both fighters are on the sme wave length ( which is something that should be established before the sparring begins) then both fighters will learn and develop.

but yes, once, about five years ago a fat guy with limited experiance sat on me with kesa gatame until the end of the fight, i asked him if he wanted to roll again and decided to put him asleep with shime waza........i now realize that this was completely unprofessional and unnecisary
