So, does anyone have any hints or tips for those of us who want to learn Japanese? Maybe some suggestions on material that would help?

Thanks.

I was thinking of trying this:

http://www.rosettastone.com/learn-japanese/level-1

But it's pretty expensive and that's only the first of 3 levels.

Another option (and the only good one) is to take language classes in Japan (I would recommend outside of Tokyo and Osaka). They most places offer 3month programms that allows you to study on a tourist visa.

You could also take college courses, most universities have actual Japanese teachers teaching the classes.

another good option. I started like that, then went to Japan. You learn a lot quicker there, but its good to have a base before going.

Japanese is hard to pick up on at first. The four different languages, only one relative to english and a different alphabet. Laughing

The best way possible to learn Japanese is to just put yourself in there, Having Japanese friends/Girlfriend help ALOT.

Books/Internet can get you started but can only take you so far. Pronounciation is a very important part of Japanese so if you surround yourself with Japanese people or go to Japan, you will pick it up very fast.

From my experiences, I'd say the best thing to do is learn hiragana/katakana from books etc, do a little general study by yourself,
'JAPANESE FOR BUSY PEOPLE' is a very good book for self study lesson to get you started.

Then, once you have some foundation, just put yourself in the mix and pick it up.

On average (from all the people I have known to go to Japan for a year etc.) It takes about 1.5 years+ of living in Japan to become quite fluent if you just put yourself in there and have a good foundation of knowledge before you go.

Many people live there for years and can't speak AT ALL, because they don't try the 'Japanese Way'. and they stay with thier comfort zones and make friends with other foriengers.

Hope my inpurt helps,
Goodluck!

It's like that with Chinese immigrants here in Vancouver, I'll be helping one out at the check-out and when I ask "would you like a bag" they shake their head in confusion... then pay with their Canadian bank card. I really dislike people living somewhere but not bothering to learn even the absolute basics of the language...

Exactly, I live on the Gold Coast in Australia and there is ALOT of tourists around, many chinese get frustrated at us because we don't understand what they are on about which is very rude and disrespectful.

And in understanding that, we should be extremely patient, especially in Japan
